3.23am

The sounds of the night
   never cease to fascinate
The murmur of the fridge
    before the sudden shuddering
    a prelude to silence
What sounds like a giant frog
    gulping air, I presume, is
    expansion & compression of pipes.
Occasionally, the acceleration
of a car or larger vehicle
making its way to who knows where
As I listen now
    there is a hum
Is it the earth rotating
    on its axis, or just
    the accumulation
of varying noises
    coalescing from the suburbs?
Beyond the sounds
   there is a stillness
   waiting to be heard
Will my mind release
   the competing thoughts
   so silence may descend?
And when it does,
    can I sit in stillness
    or will the sounds
    of my life infiltrate
                        again?
